Cluster Headaches
Cluster Headaches are thought to be one of the most severe forms of pain known. The excruciating stabbing pain of a cluster headache arrives suddenly.
It may last from 15 minutes to several hours and comes in "clusters" of headaches extending anywhere from a week to a year. Sufferers often report, "medications work too slowly to be effective for cluster migraine headache treatment," and the pain is too severe to respond to over-the-counter medications. Before reading much further, one should know that although we often use the terms interchangeably, there is really no such thing as a cluster migraine headache.

What is a Cluster Headache?
There are cluster headaches, and there are migraine headaches. The term migraine remains in the literature due to its painfully descriptive nature. There are some preventive and natural headache treatment procedures available, however.
Treating These Types of Headaches
The key to treating these different types of headaches is fast relief. Oxygen seems to be one of the best "natural" treatment - Oxygen: Breathing pure oxygen for up to 15 minutes provides considerable relief to most cluster headache sufferers. Raising blood oxygen levels relaxes constricted blood vessels, providing quick relief. It is the most common treatment for cluster type headache.
- Prescription Medications: Ergotamine tartrate (also used in migraine treatment) taken under the tongue to speed absorption is used to treat existing headaches. But this has unpleasant side effects.
- Beyond Headaches Lifestyle is real relief for real people just like you.

A cluster type of headache presents itself at a rate of approximately 69 cases per 100,000 people, and is therefore far less common that migraine headache. This malady may begin as early as age 10 and as late as 75 - 80 years of age. Women who suffer these types of headaches are more likely than men to begin experiencing attacks after the age of 50
Cluster Headache Symptoms
The pain of a these headaches commences very quickly, often without warning, and reaches a crescendo within 2 to 15 minutes. It is often excruciating in intensity, and is deep, nonfluctuating, and explosive in quality; only occasionally is it pulsatile. In addition, 10 percent of patients report superimposed bursts of stabbing, icepick-like pains in the around the eyes that last for a few seconds and may occur once or several times in rapid succession. The pain usually begins in, around, or above the eye or the temple occasionally the face, neck, ear. It is always unilateral, and generally affects the same side in subsequent bouts. This type of headache may effect the entire side of the head. However, it may also shift to the corresponding region of the opposite side in a small percentage of patients. Many patients prefer to be upright and active when an attack is in progress, which again suggests the true pedigree is not actually a Cluster Migraine Headache.
