Migraine VertigoWhat is migraine vertigo? You know that a condition is common when it develops an epigram and now we have MAV, short for Migraine-associated vertigo. This is a syndrome consisting of dizziness and/or vertigo that is suspected to be related to migraine. Some diagnosed with MAV interestingly do not have headaches which could be accurate, or a misdiagnosis. What is the Cause of this Type of Migraine?The cause of this migraine vertigo is unknown but progress is being made through clinical experience and research.This condition was previously rarely diagnosed, but is now proving to be one of the most common causes of chronic dizziness and/or recurrent vertigo. Symptoms of Migraine Associated VertigoSufferers often describe chronic dizziness in the context of a "rocking" sensation when at rest, recurrent episodes of rotational vertigo, chronic daily headaches, migraine headaches, light sensitivity, poor visual acuity and other changes in vision, nausea and significant motion intolerance.Many of these symptoms, as with nearly all headache cases, cannot be objectively observed or tested for, so physical exam, history, and imaging are often part of the work up. Diagnoising This Type of Migraine HeadacheMigraine vertigo is often misdiagnosed as Meniere's Disease, or as a psychiatric disorder.A condition previously described, known as "atypical Meniere's" is no longer recognized and is believed to be a migrainous vertigo syndrome. The following transcript is illuminating:  "I'd been having bouts with migraines, thought the storm had passed, felt a little light-headed , But then on standing up was exactly when the headache returned, tearing through me with a roar of, searing pain. I tried to walk, but the world was undulating, like walking on jello with my eyes half focused, and I couldn't tell where I was heading. On my third step I lost my balance and was on my way down, fortunately I found the couch." Migraine associated vertigo is dizziness that is associated with a migraine headache syndrome. It is a serious and confusing combination of disorders. Dizziness is one of the very most common reasons people present to the doctor. Headaches are certainly common as well. Dizziness presenting as part of a symptom complex, including headaches, is also common. The challenge is to sort out whether the dizziness and headache are occurring together by random chance, or if related, which would suggest the dizziness is a manifestation of migraine. About 10 to 14% of the adult population of the United States suffer from recurring migraine. There is a male-female occurrence ratio. Throughout life, about 5% of men have migraine Women of childbearing age have a much higher prevalence, doubling up to roughly 10% at the onset of menstruation, and increasing to nearly 30% at the peak age of 35 years. At menopause, rates of migraine abruptly decline in women back to roughly 10%.
